Mum Has a Tumor

During 2011 and 2012, while Christyne was being put through the pressures of the Hinn family fix, my mother received the news that a tumor had formed on the front part of her brain.

“A tumor? Are you sure?”

The words didn’t seem real as they slipped off my tongue. My dad, understandably uncomfortable, quickly chimed in, “She’s going to be fine. God will heal her. He probably already has.”

This was uncharted territory for our side of the Hinn family. It was my mom, and she had a tumor. For several months, it had caused all sorts of problems for her, but we had no idea. Doctors had misdiagnosed her several times, no prophetic words of knowledge were working, and finally, they found the issue. How in the world is this possible? I thought. The Hinn family never got sick. Or at least we never admitted it when we were.

Sickness that was supposed to stay so far from our home had infiltrated the heartbeat of our home—my mum. Christyne’s circumstances could be chalked up to her being an outsider who didn’t have the special anointing we had. But when the matriarch of our family was hit with a tumor, all bets were off.

It took nearly four years for my mother to be properly diagnosed because of a mixture of denial, avoidance, lack of support from my father, and the time it takes for doctors to properly diagnose these things. During that time, my father downplayed her sickness. He preached that we are all to be healthy and whole while my own mother sat silently in the front row with a tumor waging war on her brain. Doctor’s visits were done when my father was out of town. My mother hid the negative reports, and if she even hinted at the word tumor, my father would rebuke her and the word tumor in the name of Jesus. Finally, however, all the prosperity gospel power in the world could do nothing. With no choice but to pursue medical intervention, they faced the facts. It would be a surgeon’s hand that healed my mother.

I’ll never forget going to the hospital in Vancouver to visit Mum during her recovery. My stomach was in knots. It was so foreign for our family to be in a hospital. We were barely allowed in hospitals growing up because we were told that the spirit of infirmity and the spirit of death lived there. Now here we were, and it was the ultimate shock to the prosperity gospel system. No amount of prayer or faith had done the healing. Not one of the healers in our family just showed up to handle it. The experience put a serious hole in the prosperity gospel foundation I’d come to depend on in the face of adversity. When we needed healing the most, it wasn’t divine healing that solved the issue. It was medication and the skilled hands of a human surgeon.

My mother’s tumor became another layer on the mountain of evidence building against the prosperity gospel.
